Substack lets writers connect with their audience on their own terms and earn money doing it. We make it simple for writers to publish to an email list that they own, get discovered on the web, and charge for subscriptions.

More than 50,000 people pay to subscribe to writers across the Substack network, and the top writers are making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Substack’s model depends on the success of writers using Substack – we only make money when they do.

“Substack makes it dead simple to start a newsletter and get paid for it.”

"Substack gives me a way to connect with my audience on my own terms.”

Make something that matters

Great writing is valuable. By respecting the readers' time and intelligence, it earns their trust. It helps us make sense of, and change, the culture we live in. Building a better business model for writers means more great writing.

It’s also a big opportunity.

We're a team of writers and builders from Kik, Instagram, and some of the worlds top publications. Our investors include Y-Combinator, founders of Twitch and Zynga, and most recently Andreessen Horowitz.

Role

We’re looking for an ambitious relationship-builder who can help us identify and attract great writers to Substack and scale our writer recruitment process along the way. You will be among the first employees at the company. The ideal candidate has strong relationships with writers, podcasters and creatives, a nose for new media opportunities, and conviction that there is a bright future for publishing that is supported by direct payments from readers.

This is a full-time position based in San Francisco, CA.

Role

You will:

  • Help us listen and learn from writers about what’s working on Substack and why.
  • Define the strategy for writer success on Substack, creating sustainable and scalable programs.
  • Provide writers with the support they need to start and grow their publications, such as lending one-to-one editorial advice, designing case-studies and best-practice guidelines, drawing attention to Substack publications through the media, social platforms, and owned properties.
  • Help build a community of Substack writers online and offline, including hosting events in multiple cities across the country.
  • Create content for the Substack blog and other outlets to tell the world about Substack, its goals, and Substack writers
  • Represent the voice of writers in product decisions as we shape the future of Substack.

This might be a good fit for you if:

  • You have a background of working in the media industry and/or with writers, podcasters, or creative voices.
  • You enjoy taking frequent calls and meetings with a wide variety of personalities.
  • You are empathetic to the particular needs of writers and the current condition of the media landscape.
  • You are a self-starter who is able to execute resourcefully, both independently and as part of a small but growing team.
  • You are comfortable starting from scratch, meaning ambiguity or lack of process don’t get in the way of your ability to get things done.
  • You are highly organized with excellent project management skills, willing to juggle multiple fast-moving and high-priority projects at once
