We're a team of writers and builders from Kik, Instagram, GitHub, and some of the world's top publications. Our investors include Y-Combinator, founders of Twitch and Zynga, and most recently Andreessen Horowitz.


We’re looking for an ambitious relationship-builder who can help us identify and attract great writers to Substack and scale our writer recruitment process along the way. You will be among the first employees at the company. The ideal candidate has strong relationships with writers, podcasters and creatives, a nose for new media opportunities, and conviction that there is a bright future for publishing that is supported by direct payments from readers.

This is a full-time position based in San Francisco, CA.

You will:

  • Identify and build relationships with writers who can succeed with the Substack model
  • Work with the team to help writers develop and launch their Substack publications
  • Develop scalable strategies and repeatable processes that enable us to grow the number of new writers joining Substack.
  • Learn valuable insights from writers to help us serve them better — and you’ll work with product and partnerships to inform our growth trajectory.

This might be a good fit for you if:

  • You enjoy taking frequent calls and meetings with a wide variety of personalities.
  • You are empathetic to the particular needs of writers and the current condition of the media landscape.
  • You are a self-starter who is able to execute resourcefully, both independently and as part of a small but growing team.
  • You are comfortable starting from scratch, meaning ambiguity or lack of process don’t get in the way of your ability to get things done.
  • You are highly organized with excellent project management skills, willing to juggle multiple fast-moving and high-priority projects at once.
  • You have one to four years of experience in roles that require working with creative people, particularly writers.
